importance and benefits of reciting Surah Al Kahf

Surah Al Kahf is a renowned surah in the Holy Quran. It is a Makki surah which is based upon 110 verses. Whoever reads Surah Al Kahf Allah (SWT) will bless his home and protect him/her from poverty. When Surah Al Kahf was revealed to the Prophet (PBUH) was revealed, 70,000 angels were in attendance bringing with them light (Noor).

Why is this surah named Surah kahf?

Surah Al Kahf means the cave. This surah is based on four stories and all of the four stories revolved around a theme of persecution.

Describe the four stories of trials in surah Al kahf?

1) Trial (fitnah) of faith

The first of these four stories is the persecution for the sake of religion. This story is about several young men who were driven out of their homes because they believed in ALLAH . They found shelter in a cave and went to sleep in it for many years. So hence this surah discusses the theme of protection or shelter.

ii) Fitnah of wealth

The second is the Fitnah or the temptation of wealth. We are constantly tempted by the desire for wealth. In Surah Al Kahf ALLAH (SWT) said that

“Wealth and children are the adornments of this worldly life, but the everlasting good deeds are far better with your lord in reward and hope”. (Surah Al Kahf:46)

iii) Fitnah of knowledge

Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) said that once Moses stood up and he was asked who the most learned man amongst the people was. He said “I”. Allah reprimanded him as he did not attribute absolute knowledge to him (ALLAH). So ALLAH said to him: yes, at the junction of two seas there is a slave of mine who is more learned than you.

How can I meet him? So ALLAH instructed Hazrat Musa(PBUH) as to where to find the man who was known as “AL-Khidr”-the green one. ALLAH bestows knowledge to whoever he wishes.

iv) Fitnah of power

The fourth and last story which explains ALLAH(SWT) in Surah Kahf is about Dhu al  Qarnayan.   He was given a vast kingdom stretching from east to west.He was a true believer of Allah and a gifted ruler. He traveled to the east from the west , helping people.

During his travels he helped many needy people, especially the ones who were persecuted by the tribe of Gog and Magog, thus dealing with the fitnah of power.Dhu al Qarnayan built a wall to keep this barbaric tribe away. Allah said that in Surah Kahf say “O prophet, shall we inform you of who will lose the most deeds? They are those whose efforts are in vain in the world.
